Week in Indiana and trip back to Texas (June 5-12)

We made it safely to Indiana—drove the first day to Jackson, Tennessee and continued the next day to Jeffersonville, IN where our daughter lives.  We had a busy few days helping son to finish moving to Louisville.  Once we had the remainder of his belongings packed, we helped our daughter get better organized in preparation for her move to a new apartment at the end of the month.  After getting the apartment in order, we had to tackle the storage unit which was actually our main goal for the trip.  Both children had some things in storage and the rest of our belongings had to be sorted.  Some things went right into the dumpster and other boxes went to Goodwill.  That pared it all down quite a bit so the remainder would fit in either the truck or the U-Haul trailer.  We packed the trailer on Sunday so we could leave early on Monday morning to drive through Louisville before the rush hour traffic.

We also visited with our special friends, Becky and Rob, and had dinner with them a couple of times.  Enjoyed pizza at River City Winery in downtown New Albany and another dinner with them at Cheddar’s in Clarksville, IN.  We saw other friends on Sunday at church.  I would have liked to visit my Guthrie/Mayes “family” but time ran out on a week filled with packing, etc.  We will probably return to Southern Indiana in late August.

Our trip home was equally uneventful and we were able to make the drive in two days with an overnight stop just west of Little Rock.  The next day after a good night’s sleep back in our cozy cottage, we worked to unload the trailer and truck.  Our goal was to unload everything and then go to Lowe’s to get a big sheet of plywood.  The plywood was to put on the back porch so Pat’s work bench and other items would be on a stable base.  We arrived back at the cottage with the plywood but it had slid and we couldn’t open the trailer door.  What a dilemma!   After struggling and trying to pry it open, we finally decided there was no alternative but to take the trailer to U-Haul in hopes that they could open it.  That succeeded but then we had to figure out how to get it home.  We thought the plywood would fit in the back of the Traverse but that didn’t work.  The U-Haul guys came up with the solution—lay it on top of the truck’s toolbox and across the fifth wheel hitch.  YEA—it worked!!

While driving, we discussed the reasons for having two vehicles and decided that the need for two no longer existed.  After arriving back in Texas and taking care of the priority of unloading the trailer, we went to the local Chevrolet dealer to see if they would be interested in buying the Traverse.  That was a success and we left the dealership as a one vehicle family!!  They gave us a fair price and we didn’t have to go through the hassle of selling it as a private sale.

Now we are looking forward to our departure from Texas on July 11 to head north for a couple of months.  Everyone told us that we would NOT want to stay here all summer and they are so right!  Our initial plan is to head to a Thousand Trail park in Alabama where we are meeting our daughter for a week in a cabin/park model.  After that we will head towards Michigan where we hope it will be cooler and less humid.  Stay tuned for our future travels.

Travel to Indiana

We have had a few hectic days. First our new door needed to be picked up from Athens, TX which was about a three hour drive one way. That comprised our day on Saturday.

Then Pat decided to clean out stuff under the deck. Well as he pulled pieces of rotten wood out, he discovered some suspicious white ant type of bugs. Upon researching on the Internet, we came to the conclusion that the bugs were TERMITES. We promptly tried to find an exterminator and settled on Orkin. We called them on Friday and set up a time for them to do an inspection on Monday (yesterday). The worry set in over the weekend not knowing what damage there might be. The inspection was finally done at 5:30 after waiting all day The outcome is that there are termites but they had not yet penetrated any part of the deck or cottage structure. What a relief!!

Also yesterday we had the new door installed so goodbye warped door and hello new straight door that has an excellent seal!!

In between all this, we had to pack suitcases and get everything into the truck for a 4:30 morning departure. We are stopping for the night at Jackson, TN and will complete the trip to Indiana tomorrow. I hope not as early as today!

Oh yes, on Sunday our daughter who we are staying with, had an accident at work and has a very bad sprained ankle/foot and is on crutches. I guess our stay with her is well-timed so we can help her. Thank goodness her brother lives in the area and could be with her at the ER on Sunday night.
I guess there is never a dull moment.
